Apple warns: Why MacBook users should not cover the camera

The document literally states:

“Closing your Mac notebook when a camera cover is attached can damage the display. To protect your privacy, Mac notebooks have a status indicator for the camera to notify you when the camera is on.

As a result, the distance between the display and the keyboard is “designed for very small tolerances”, which means that if the camera is covered, the display and the ambient light sensor may be damaged or impaired.

Users who want to prevent monitoring via the cam should instead use the status display for the camera. This informs you whether the camera is switched on or off. In addition, MacBook users can decide in the system settings which apps are allowed to use the device’s camera.
