Coronavirus, current figures: around 4900 active cases in Germany – guide

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the health authorities in Germany reported 522 new corona infections within one day. This means that at least 202,345 people in Germany have been demonstrably infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis, as reported by the RKI on Tuesday morning (data status on July 21, midnight).

According to the RKI, 9090 people infected with the virus have died in Germany so far – an increase of 4 compared to the previous day. According to RKI estimates, 188 100 people had survived the infection by Tuesday morning. There are around 5200 active cases in Germany.

The R value

According to RKI estimates, the number of reproductions, or R-value for short, as of July 20, 00:00, was 1.15 in Germany (previous day: 1.25). This means that an infected person infects more than one other person on average. The R-value shows the infection process approximately one and a half weeks beforehand.

The RKI also specifies a so-called seven-day R. It refers to a longer period and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.13 (previous day: 1.22) as of July 20, 00:00 a.m. It shows the infection from 8 to 16 days ago.

How the counties comply with the limit values

In order to be able to react to new spreads in good time, the federal and state governments have set a corona limit for new infections. It is 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

How widespread is Corona worldwide?

The worldwide corona case numbers are determined by the private Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). If you compare the German numbers of the Johns Hopkins University with those of the RKI, then the RKI seems to be lagging behind when it comes to recording new corona cases. Reason: Both institutions determine the number of cases in different ways.

This is how the RKI works

The Robert Koch Institute, as an independent federal agency for infectious diseases, currently determines all of our lives with its numbers, examinations and the knowledge gained from it.

People with 90 different professions from 50 nations work there. Of the 1296 employees, 1224 are in Berlin and 72 in the branch in Wernigerode. The Berlin 24/7 location center alone has 150 employees.

“In the current situation, the majority of the entire staff is concerned with the fight against the Covid 19 virus,” said RKI spokeswoman Susanne Glasmacher.
