Chancellor Angela Merkel has been optimistic that an agreement will be reached at the special EU summit on the planned Corona aid.

“After a long negotiation, we worked out a framework for a possible agreement last night. This is progress, ”said Merkel in Brussels. There is hope that an agreement may be reached on day four of the summit, or at least that an agreement is possible.

At the current EU special summit, Merkel and the other 26 heads of state and government have been negotiating a billion-dollar economic stimulus package in Brussels since Friday morning to alleviate the economic consequences of the corona pandemic. An agreement on the long-term EU budget must also be reached. In total, it is about 1.8 trillion euros. The summit should only last two days.

Merkel said: “It was clear that the negotiations were incredibly tough. They will continue today. But extraordinary situations also require extraordinary efforts. “She hopes that“ the remaining distance, which will not be easy, can still be covered by us ”.
