Real Madrid secured the Spanish football championship for the 34th time a matchday before the end of the season. The record champions took a 2-1 (1-0) win against FC Villarreal on Thursday evening and took the first title in three years. For the royal it is the third championship in the past twelve years. FC Barcelona had won four of their last five league titles.
Before the last matchday on Sunday, the team of coach Zinédine Zidane is seven points ahead of defending champions Barcelona and can no longer be pushed out of first place.
The second placed Catalans surprisingly lost 1: 2 (0: 1) against CA Osasuna. It was Barcelona’s first loss since the Spanish league restarted after the Corona crisis interruption. But a win would not have helped Barcelona either. Only if Real had slipped on the last two matchdays would Barcelona have had a chance to win the title.
“This is the price of our work and our persistence. The price of all the work since the restart. It has never been easy, but we have remained calm,” said real captain Sergio Ramos on Spanish television.
In view of the increasing number of coronavirus cases before the game, Real had urged his supporters to forego the usual celebrations at the Cibeles fountain. The league, the football association and the authorities also warned to adhere to the applicable measures.
Barcelona subsides, Real with winning streak
Before the league started again in June, Barça was two points ahead of Real, but then Quique Setien’s team left too many points. Real, on the other hand, has won all ten games since the game resumed.
In the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, where Real has played all home games since the restart, Karim Benzema (29th, 77th / foul meter) paved the way to victory. The penalty kick was controversial, the first execution strange. Ramos went down in the penalty area after a slight contact with his opponent, but referee Alejandro Hernández decided on a penalty.
Ramos himself started, but only briefly tipped the ball forward. Benzema sprinted into the penalty area and converted the template to the alleged 2-0. The goal did not count because Benzema had started too early in the penalty area. During the repetition, the Frenchman started himself and hit the bottom left gate. Villarrelas Iborra (84th) made the connection.
In Barcelona, Osasuna Jose Arnaiz (16.) and Roberto Torres (90. + 4) were successful, Barça star Lionel Messi (62.) temporarily equalized with a directly converted free kick. The guests ended the game after the red card against Enric (75th) with only ten men.
