Santos and veteran international striker Robinho said on Friday they had agreed to part ways under the pressure on the Brazilian soccer team because he was convinced in Italy he raped a young woman in 2013 while he was working for Milan played.
Robson de Souza, popularly known as Robinho, was on a 36-month deal with Santos, the team he played for a few days ago, before moving to Real Madrid, Manchester and Milan.
“Santos Football Club and player Robinho have announced that they have mutually agreed to suspend his contract, signed on October 10, so that the player in Italy can focus solely on defending himself,” the club said in a statement on Twitter posted.
“With great sadness in my heart, I let you know that I made the decision with the President [of the soccer club] to suspend my contract at this turbulent time in my life, “said Robinho, 36, in a video.” My goal has always been to help the Santos football club. ”
“If my presence is a disturbance in any way, it is better to go and see to my personal affairs,” he said.
Since the news of his contract with Santos came out, the club has been under increasing pressure from fans, media and women’s groups to cut ties with a nine-year prison sentence imposed by an Italian court in 2017 for rape of Robinho, Having attended four years earlier.
Robinho, who was once touted as the successor to Santos’ most famous player, Pele, is appealing for conviction, claiming he is innocent.
But the club’s sponsors had threatened to withdraw if he stayed in Santos. And Globo Sports television released excerpts from a recording that Italian prosecutors used to secure their conviction, in which the player allegedly said, “I laugh because I don’t care. The woman was completely drunk. She doesn’t even know what happened. ”
Robinho was found guilty of participating in the rape of a woman in her twenties in a Milan nightclub with a group of companions.
Santos, who also incubated contemporary star Neymar, had so far resisted pressure to part ways with Robinho and insisted that the trial was still ongoing.
Robinho started his career there in 2002 and moved to Real Madrid in 2005. He then played for Manchester City and Milan.
