Van Dijk’s season could be over as Liverpool confirm an upcoming operation

Liverpool have announced that Virgil van Dijk will have to undergo surgery for his knee injury The 2-2 draw on Saturday in Everton.

The Dutch central defender injured his knee ligaments after the reckless challenge from Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.

Van Dijk was able to leave the field but further assessment of the injury has indicated that surgery is required.

The reds say No specific time scale is placed after his return to action in this phase.

It’s a nightmare scenario for Liverpool. Van Dijk hadn’t missed a minute of the Premier League since September 2019 and his influence on the team has been instrumental in helping them win the Champions League and Premier League over the past two seasons.

The club is more hopeful in summer. Thiago Alcantara, who also had a scan of his knee late Saturday after the high tackle in which Richarlison was sent off, is not serious.

Manager Jürgen Klopp now has to think about what life will mean for his team without 29-year-old Van Dijk for a likely longer period.

The Reds boss chose not to sign a replacement when Dejan Lovren moved to Zenit St. Petersburg that summer and insisted midfielder Fabinho could fill in – and he has already done so this season.

After Klopp replaced Joe Gomez, who was out of shape, with Joel Matip, who played his first game since the opening day of the season at Goodison Park, he will have to compete against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday against the untested and injury-related duo.

23-year-old Nat Phillips, who only made one FA Cup appearance on both sides of two loan games in Stuttgart last season, is now the replacement option for the highly rated but unproven 17-year-old Billy Koumetio .

Liverpool’s defense already looked leaky this season, conceding 13 goals in five games – including seven at Aston Villa – with Van Dijk in their last four games. So his absence will raise real questions about their distance chances in a title race.

However, Klopp wanted to throw his back behind Gomez after a shaky couple of weeks.

“The set piece (for Everton’s first) was unlucky because Virgil was not on the field. We sorted them in the game but it was the first corner when he wasn’t on the field, ”he said.

“Joe Gomez played a sensational game. A good game. I am not worried about the boys.

“The problem we have right now is that I’m not really in a good mood, I hurt players in the dressing room and that’s not good.”

The only good thing for Liverpool is that no team has defended so well and Liverpool’s attacking options are some of the best in the league.

Not that it made much difference at Goodison Park, where they were held back twice after three minutes by Sadio Mane and then Mohamed Salah’s 100th goal in 159 games, a brilliantly instinctive volley.

Two headers undone it, the first from Michael Keane on a corner and then a welcoming cross from Lucas Digne that gave Dominic Calvert-Lewin the chance to do what he does best and close at the back post in the air stay to overtake Andy Robertson and beat Adrian.

Liverpool have filed a request with the Premier League to review VAR decisions.
