SV Ried managed a 1-1 draw against WAC in the 9th round of the Tipico Bundesliga, outnumbered. Dejan Joveljic had put the Carinthians in the lead in the 54th minute, before Marco Grüll converted a penalty to equalize in the closing stages. WAC thus missed its third Bundesliga victory in a row.
Lively initial phase in the Lavant Valley
The guests from Ried started with exactly the same starting line-up as against Rapid in the game against Wolfsberger. And the Innviertler started ambitiously, dared to do something and had the first end of the game: Marco Grüll withdrew from a corner kick from the back area, but his shot from around 18 meters went just over it (8th). Four minutes later, the home side became dangerous for the first time: Scherzer prevailed on the left and served Joveljic, who left Ried defender Reiner standing with a quick hook and put himself in a good shooting position. However, he circled the ball very close to the right corner of the cross (12th).
Shortly afterwards it got hectic in the penalty area of the newcomer: Liendl was able to pull twice from close range, but each time a Rieder was able to block the shot. In the third attempt, Scherzer shot at the goal of Sahin-Radlinger, who was able to distinguish himself with a strong save (15th). Ten minutes later it was Jonathan Scherzer again, who had found a good opportunity after a Pavelic cross. However, his header went over the gate. In the meantime, the Carinthians were the determining team in the Lavanttal-Arena. It didn’t get really dangerous until half-time, so it went into the dressing room with a goalless draw.
WAC missed the preliminary decision – Grüll equalized with a penalty
Immediately after the break, Michael Lercher weakened the newcomer when he came too late in a duel with Mario Pavelic. Referee Harald Lechner showed the 24-year-old yellow for the second time that afternoon (48th). This meant that the Rieder had to contest practically the entire second half outnumbered. Shortly afterwards, Dejan Joveljic shot from close range, but Radlinger was in his position and parried well.
A few minutes later, the Serb made it better and shot Wolfsberger in the lead: Michael Liendl served Joveljic with a wonderful high pass from his own half. The loan from Eintracht Frankfurt took on the leather with the chest and sank it untenable in the short corner – 1-0 (54th). Ten minutes later, Joveljic had a great chance to make it 2-0, but the crossbar prevented the Serbian from scoring a second goal this afternoon.
While the WAC had everything under control in the second half, very little came from SV Ried, especially on the offensive. But the guests from Upper Austria managed to equalize because Lochoshvili had gone into a duel with Grüll regardless of the losses and had caused a penalty. Marco Grüll gratefully accepted the invitation to make it 1-1 and turned it safely (85th). Sahin-Radlinger was able to prevent the home side’s last-minute victory with a hammer parade in the last second of stoppage time.
