Aldi takes over more than 500 branches in France


Dhe food discounter Aldi is taking over 547 branches and three central warehouses of its competitor Groupe Casino in France. It is the largest acquisition in the history of the Aldi Nord group of companies. The German group announced in Essen.

Aldi Nord put the purchase at 717 million euros. A binding offer was made in March, and the competition authorities have now given their final approval. The integration of the markets should be completed by the end of 2021. Most of the branches are currently operated under the Leader Price brand.

With the takeover, Aldi is pursuing the goal of becoming the market leader in the food discount sector in France. The medium-term goal, the company said, is to further consolidate and optimize the branch network so that customers can reach an Aldi store anywhere in the country within a quarter of an hour.

“We are very pleased that we can further expand our brand by bringing together the stores and employees of Leader Price, Casino Supermarchés and Aldi. It is our aim at Aldi to provide everyone with what they need for their daily lives, anytime and anywhere, ”said Philip Demeulemeester, who is responsible for the discounter’s France business.
