The Theater an der Wien defies the lockdown and together with ORF III is showing the eagerly awaited premiere of Alfred Dorfer as an opera director. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” is of course not read by Dorfer as a cabaret, but as a social panorama, about a world that is shaking. How does civil society come about? And with it bourgeois morality? A new look at a classic could arise.

The question of how a cabaret artist can transform himself into a director of an opera is something Dorfer may be hanging out with. He now gives the answers with his staging, which will certainly not be cabaret, but which meets with cabaret at the point where the state of society is examined more acutely. “The Figaro offers, in my opinion, a generally valid, timeless description of the state of human conditions that take place in private, but are also broken at this very special level of exercise of power,” said Dorfer, who with his opera team is the decay of an old world and watches as a new world emerges, which in turn is in danger of becoming encrusted in its moral categories.

The historian Reinhart Koselleck has always foreseen something like this – and the models from the late 18th century such as those by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and Lorenzo Da Ponte are seismographs for a saddle time.

The “Figaro” as a change from the ancien to the bourgeois “regime”

“Basic melody of my life”

For Dorfer, Mozart is “the basic melody of my life”, as he said: “Mozart is the music of my childhood, I grew up with Mozart and the Viennese Classic and had six years of classical piano lessons.” That is why he accepted, and because he knew that the Theater an der Wien keeps asking non-genre artists, such as Christoph Waltz and Stefan Ruzowitzky.

Dorfer helped in his first production by the director Kateryna Sokolova, who helped bring Dorfer’s ideas to the stage. The focus of the production is on the Romanian soprano Cristina Pasaroiu as Countess and the Austrian bass-baritone Florian Boesch as Count Almaviva. For the roles of Figaro, Robert Gleadow and Giulia Semenzato are decidedly young representatives of their guild. Stefan Gottfried conducts the Concentus Musicus Vienna, the Arnold Schoenberg Choir sings under the direction of Erwin Ortner.

As part of the ORF III series “We play for Austria”, the new production of Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” from the Theater an der Wien, which has been postponed due to the coronavirus, will be shown on November 29, 2020 at 8.15 p.m.

“You can expect Alfred Dorfer to work very carefully on the relationship levels between the characters. And with Florian Boesch we have a singer who will play a very physical count in his dramatic power, ”said the director of the Theater an der Wien, Roland Geyer.
