Bayr demands: “Fight AIDS, not people with AIDS”

13 million people living with HIV have no access to drugs

Vienna (OTS / SK) “Discrimination against people with HIV / AIDS must come to an end. It is high time to concentrate all your energy on the fight against the HI virus instead of on people with HIV, ”said Petra Bayr, SP Area Spokesperson for Global Development, on the occasion of December 1st, the World AIDS Day. According to the United Nations, 38 million people worldwide live with HIV. Only 25 million have access to antiretroviral therapy. “International development cooperation programs play an important role in securing access to medicines. But there is more, ”says Bayr, calling on the international community not to cut funds for development cooperation, but to increase them, despite the pandemic. ****

“December 1st is a sign against any form of discrimination against people with HIV / AIDS,” emphasizes Bayr. In Austria, as in large parts of the world, people who live with HIV / AIDS are still excluded in everyday life, suffer from prejudice or silence out of shame. Protection offers, among other things, a corresponding legal basis based on human rights. “It is essential that laws on AIDS and HIV worldwide focus above all on the human rights of the groups affected and end discrimination and stigmatization,” the National Council member calls on her colleagues around the world to put factual and human rights-based legislation before populism.
