The numbers are alarming: 22,680 people were violently killed in Brazil in the first half of 2020 alone, around six percent more than in the same period of the previous year, more than in almost any other country.
Human rights activists and Scientists agree: The arms trade should be more strictly regulated in order to curb the killing. But the opposite happened under Jair Bolsonaro. The right-wing extremist president made it easier for private individuals to get hold of firearms by changing the law. He also softened the import rules. While Brazilian manufacturers previously held the market monopoly, more and more foreign companies have recently entered the market. This promises high profits for companies. For Brazil it means an increase in armed violence. Between January and October 2020, 150,121 weapons were registered in Brazil, significantly more than in the entire previous year.
“This is a very dangerous development. We will pay a high price for the relaxation of the laws in the long term, «said Leonel Radde, a policeman from Porto Alegre on the phone.
