Manchester City qualified ahead of schedule for the Champions League round of 16. Real Madrid won the top game against Inter Milan in the battle for second place behind Borussia Mönchengladbach. Liverpool FC made a mistake against Robin Gosens and Atalanta Bergamo.
ManCity is in the round of 16. Team manager Pep Guardiola’s team won the group game against Greek representatives Olympiacos Piraeus 1-0 (1-0) and celebrated their fourth victory in the fourth game (the highlights in the video). This means that the Citizens cannot be ousted from one of the first two places in Group C two games before the end of the group phase.
The English young star Phil Foden (36th) scored the winning goal for the English runner-up. National player Ilkay Gündogan was in the starting line-up and was replaced shortly before the end of the game.
Real Madrid wins top game against Inter Milan
In Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Group B, record winners Real Madrid kept close contact with the leading Rhinelanders with a 2-0 (0-0) at Inter Milan (the highlights in the video). Eden Hazard (7th, foul penalty) and an own goal by ex-Dortmund Achraf Hakimi (59th) significantly improved the starting position of the Royal team around national player Toni Kroos for the final spurt.
In contrast, in Munich’s group A, the race for second place is still open. Atletico Madrid missed a preliminary decision in their favor with a zero number against Lokomotiv Moscow, so that even bottom RB Salzburg can theoretically advance.
Liverpool FC fail against Robin Gosens and Co.
Liverpool missed their first chance to reach the round of 16 in Group D with an unexpected 0-2 (0-0) home defeat against Atalanta Bergamo (the highlights in the video). The German team manager Jürgen Klopp’s team had to give up points for the first time against the Italians.
The decision in favor of the guests was made by national player Robin Gosens (64th) after Bergamo’s lead by Josip Ilicic (60th). Ajax Amsterdam took advantage of the Reds slip and brought a 3: 1 (0: 0) against FC Midtjylland level with Bergamo within striking distance of the English champions, who are only two points ahead of the pursuing duo.
Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona as well as Juventus Turin and FC Sevilla had already qualified for the knockout phase on Tuesday.
