In Cloppenburg, hundreds of farmers have been blocking a central warehouse of the Lidl discounter with their tractors since Sunday evening. They demonstrate against the low prices for food.

According to the Cloppenburg police, there were still around 400 farmers with 300 tractors on site that morning. On Sunday evening they first met at Bundestraße 72. When the police tried to stop them, they bypassed the barriers and stood in the entrance and exit of the central warehouse.

Low prices: farmers see their livelihoods threatened

The farmers’ protest is directed against the pricing of the large supermarket chains. Agriculture in Germany is currently being hit against the wall, said a spokesman. Farmers had already blocked a central warehouse of Edeka in the Ammerland district on Friday. The reason was cheap offers for dairy products. Farmers have long been demanding more money for milk and meat.
