Joe Biden relies on experienced women from the Obama era for his communications team: Jen Psaki is to become the new spokeswoman for the White House. At the same time, a violation of the elected US president causes a stir.
US President-elect Joe Biden has announced the composition of his future communications team. The high-ranking posts in the White House are filled exclusively with women. Kate Bedingfield will become communications director, Biden said. Bedingfield was already working as Vice President as his communications director in Biden’s time. This role is about the entire communication strategy.
The government spokeswoman is said to be Jen Psaki, who worked for the future president’s campaign. She was also the White House communications director and State Department spokesperson under ex-President Barack Obama. Since the election, Psaki had led several briefings with journalists for Biden. She was direct, clear and professional.
First exclusively female communication team
Karine Jean Pierre, previously Chief of Staff of the elected Vice President Kamala Harris, is to become Vice Press Spokeswoman. Pierre also served under Obama – then as regional director in the political affairs office at government headquarters. Pili Tobar, a senior member of Biden’s campaign team, is said to be the White House’s deputy communications director.
Top positions in the communications team of future Vice President Harris also go to women. It is the first time that the entire head of this area in government headquarters will be female. The personnel policy is intended to reflect the stated goal of a diverse workforce in the White House, which Biden already spent in the election campaign. Biden now said the “qualified and experienced” candidates bring different approaches and a common will to move the country forward. It is expected that the future communications team will return to a more traditional collaboration with the capital city press.
Inauguration in the support shoe?
Almost at the same time as Biden’s most recent personnel decisions, it became known that the 78-year-old sprained his right ankle while playing with his German shepherd and sustained small stress fractures in his foot. It can therefore be assumed that Biden will have to wear a boot-like orthopedic support shoe for several weeks, his doctor explained. This makes it possible that Biden will still have to wear the support shoe during his planned ceremonial inauguration on January 20.
The incumbent President Donald Trump, meanwhile, continues to refuse to recognize Biden’s victory. He has been talking about “massive electoral fraud” for weeks, but has not presented any reliable evidence. US courts have already thrown down numerous lawsuits aimed at challenging the election results and his Republican allies. After an original refusal, however, Trump’s government initiated the legally required, orderly handover (“transition”) a week ago. On this Monday, Biden and Harris were supposed to receive the strictly confidential briefing from the secret services for the first time, which normally only goes to the White House. In addition, the head of the Corona working group of the White House, Deborah Birx, said in a TV interview that she hopes to speak to Biden on Monday as well.
