WiesbadenFrom January to September 2020, Germany imported fireworks weighing 30,700 tons, valued at 75.6 million euros. The Federal Statistical Office announced on Sunday. In order to avoid group gatherings, the New Year’s Eve fireworks 2020 should actually be restricted during the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, imports of fireworks are three percent higher than in the same period last year.
Last year, the fireworks were smaller than in previous years. At that time, firecrackers were banned in many places because of climate change and to reduce fine dust pollution in city centers. In 2019 as a whole, almost 42,200 tons of fireworks with a value of 108.4 million euros were imported into Germany, almost 5,200 tons less than in the previous year. In 2018, the import volume reached a record level of almost 47,400 tons.
In the first nine months of this year and also last year, almost all of the fireworks imported into Germany came from China. In 2019, the share of all imports was 97 percent. Chinese fireworks have consistently accounted for more than 90 percent of all fireworks introduced over the past twenty years.
90 percent more exports in 2020
The quantities of exported fireworks are traditionally well below the imports. In 2019, 4,400 tonnes worth over 15.9 million euros were exported. Current monthly figures show a significant increase: The export volume from January to September 2020 (3,800 tons) rose by 90 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Most of the exports (over 80 percent) went to the Netherlands. The neighboring country recently passed a complete ban on the trade and use of fireworks for the upcoming turn of the year.
