If you want to avoid that, you have to look for alternatives. But they are rare, because Google’s free offer has been virtually unbeatable so far. But: It is possible that some people already have paid storage available as an alternative solution without knowing it!
What exactly does Google Photos do? Many Android smartphones use the app as standard to manage recordings from the mobile phone camera and automatically save them to Google’s online storage. It can also be used to transfer all of the recordings made to the iPhone. The advantage: So far, unlimited storage capacity for high-quality images (maximum 16 megabytes file size), plus a convenient search function.
What exactly is changing? From June 1, 2021, backed up photos will be counted towards the free storage that belongs to every Google account. 15 gigabytes of space are available, but this is also used by Google services such as Drive and Gmail.
This means that anyone who backs up their recordings with Google Photos from June 1st of next year will slowly fill up the free storage space. And when that is used up, additional space has to be bought.
Google thinks that for most users it could take years before the available free storage is exhausted. But anyone who uses services such as Drive and Gmail in addition to Google Photos could reach the limit of free storage within a few months.
What can you do then? If you want to continue using Google Photos as usual, you have to take out a subscription to Google One. There, for example, 100 gigabytes of storage space costs 1.99 euros per month. For 9.99 euros per month you get 2 terabytes (corresponds to approx. 2000 gigabytes).
Are you already paying for these providers?
But if you are not attached to Google Photos, you can move to another online storage facility – which you may already have paid for without knowing it!
Example Amazon: If you have a Prime membership (7.99 euros per month or 69 euros per year), you have free online storage for an unlimited number of photos in original quality.
With the Amazon Photos app (available for Android and iPhone) the recordings are transferred from the smartphone. In the app and on the website amazon.de/photos the photos can be viewed, searched, sorted into albums or shared with other people.
|providers||Free storage||Bookable (selection)||price per month|
|Google photos||15 GB||100 GB/ 2000 GB||1.99 Euro / 9.99 Euro|
|Amazon Photos||–||unlimited photo storage||7,99 Euro|
|Dropbox||6 GB||2000 GB||9,99 Euro|
|Microsoft OneDrive||5 GB||1000 GB||7 Euro|
|Strato HiDrive||–||1000 GB||7 Euro|
|Telekom MagentaCloud||3 or 15 GB *||1000 GB||9,95 Euro|
* 15 GB only for Telekom customers
Example Microsoft: Anyone who has taken out a Microsoft subscription for themselves or the whole family to use the programs in the Office package has a large online storage facility with OneDrive included.
The “Microsoft 365 Single” tariff (7 euros per month or 69 euros per year) includes 1 terabyte of storage space; the “Microsoft 365 Family” family plan (10 euros per month or 99 euros per year) includes 1 terabyte Terabytes for up to six people.
Photos can be automatically transferred from the smartphone to the online storage with the OneDrive app, where they can be viewed and searched.
Take Deutsche Telekom, for example: Anyone who has a cell phone or landline contract with Telekom can secure 15 gigabytes of free storage in the so-called MagentaCloud. If you need more space, you can, for example, book 1 terabyte for 9.95 euros.
Photos and other data can then also be transferred to the online storage with the MagentaCloud app.
No real alternatives
And what about other online storage providers? There are no real alternatives to the offer from Google Photos, since prices or storage offers are not more attractive than the Google service.
The well-known online storage device Dropbox offers 6 gigabytes of storage space for free – very little if you want to fill it continuously with photos. To really have a lot of space available, a subscription would be necessary: 2 terabytes cost 9.99 euros per month.
The German online storage provider Strato does not offer free storage. For example, if you want to rent space for 1 terabyte of data here, you pay 7 euros per month.
BILD conclusion: The best alternative to Google Photos is Amazon Photos – if you already have a paid Prime subscription anyway. Microsoft OneDrive can also replace the Google service in conjunction with an existing Microsoft 365 subscription.
However, if you do not have such a subscription so far, you will be better off with the future surcharge on Google Photos than if you switch to another provider. And at the same time saves the annoying moving of data.
