While the Styrofoam monkeys are being packed up by Peter Fischli these days and leaving the Kunsthaus, Jakob Lena Knebl and Ashley Hans Scheirl are preparing for their appearance. The stages for the shrill, queer productions by the Viennese artist duo will be set up by December 12th. It remains to be seen whether the opening can be opened.

KUB Director Thomas D. Trummer is convinced that what the duo shows will also cause a sensation at a later date. “I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a sea of ice on the ground floor and a witch’s sabbath with a flying witch on the floor above, so it will be very exciting,” says the KUB director.

Different types of perception

The pandemic has changed our perception, shifted our focus to the tiny, the invisible. The Swiss artist Pamela Rosenkranz has been working on this for a long time. She creates large room settings and yet works with very small things such as bacteria. Your art show will be on view at KUB from March 2021.

The third large personal in the coming KUB exhibition year is dedicated to Anri Sala. Among other things, he will make the Kunsthaus tangible as a listening room. “Anri Sala makes films, makes films and the music is the protagonist. Pieces play themselves, ”explains Trummer.

The final show of 2021, with the Nigerian artist Otobong Nkanga, reveals the interdependencies between the global movement of goods and power. “Nkanga deals with resources, with sucking the southern world through the northern and western world,” Trummer puts it in words.

Contemporary art space

Gender identities, micro-worlds, perceptual realities – with these themes the exhibitions deliver what the Kunsthaus should be, according to Trummer: a place where the present is negotiated.

On the basis of a positive balance for 2020, because despite the four-month closure, 32,000 visitors were counted, Trummer looks confidently into the new year. This year the state contribution for the KUB was 2.8 million euros. The budget yet to be decided will show whether this will also be the case in 2021.
