Mith a strike lasting several days, Amazon employees in Germany want to put further pressure on in the years of struggle for a collective agreement. As part of a nationwide strike called for by the Verdi union, employees stopped working at several locations at the beginning of the shift from Wednesday to Thursday, for example in Koblenz, Rheine and Werne. The strike should therefore last until Saturday.

Due to the corona pandemic, a “silent strike” was agreed in consultation with the responsible health department in Koblenz. Most of the strikers stayed at home, the spokesman said. Accordingly, only ten employees gathered in front of the factory premises on Thursday morning. According to the spokesman, how many employees went down in total can only be assessed after the strike. However, he rates the participation in strikes higher than in previous years.

Conflict stuck for years

Around the high-turnover shopping day “Black Friday”, the union had called for work stoppages at seven German shipping centers. According to Verdi spokesman, there are currently around 2,600 employees in Koblenz, including around 800 seasonal workers for the Christmas season.

At Amazon in Germany there have been repeated strikes for years – without any tangible results in the deadlocked conflict. Verdi regularly calls for work stoppages – for example during Christmas business or on bargain days like “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”. The union demands collective bargaining. Amazon argues that the company offers payment at the upper end of the industry standard in logistics, plus there are career opportunities and many extras.

The group of the American billionaire Jeff Bezos rejects collective agreements. The company has multiplied its number of employees in recent years. There are disputes with the trade unions not only in Germany.
