A new daily high of corona victims was reported from Germany on Wednesday: 410 new deaths were reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours, bringing the total to 14,771. Against this background, the federal government and the federal states are discussing tightening measures on Wednesday in order to be able to relax the rules for Christmas.
The highest number of deaths to date was recorded in Germany in mid-April with 315 within one day. The number of new infections has now increased slightly: According to the RKI, that was 18,633 within 24 hours on Wednesday morning – and thus a good 1,000 cases more than a week ago.
Compared to the high of 23,648 reported cases, however, a decline has been recorded. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted 961,320 detected infections with SARS-CoV-2.
In order to bring the numbers down and thus allow easing for Christmas, the partial lockdown in Germany should initially be tightened. Prior to today’s video conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the prime ministers of the federal states agreed in advance on uniform contact rules for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. They do not want to ban fireworks completely – but prohibit large fireworks in busy public places and streets.
In the USA, too, the number of corona deaths recorded within one day rose to the highest level since the beginning of May. On Tuesday, authorities reported 2,146 deaths with a confirmed coronavirus infection, according to data from the University of Johns Hopkins (JHU) in Baltimore. On the same day of the previous week it was 1,692. The highest value so far was reached on April 15 with 2,609 deaths in one day.
At the same time, there were 172,935 new corona cases nationwide on Tuesday. In the previous week, around 160,500 new infections were reported on the same day. The highest value so far within one day was registered on Friday with around 196,000 new infections.
