Despite massive arrests during protests against the ruler Alexander Lukashenko, the opposition in Belarus (Belarus) is calling for new actions on Sunday (from 10 a.m. CET). During the “march of the neighbors”, people should first gather in their residential areas and then join together in larger protest marches.

Protests in Belarus for months

Last Sunday the security forces detonated flare and noise grenades. The Wesna Human Rights Center spoke of 300 arrests.

There have been strikes and mass protests against Lukashenko in Belarus since the controversial presidential election on August 9th. After 26 years in office, the 66-year-old was declared the winner again with 80.1 percent of the vote. The opposition, however, sees civil rights activist Svetlana Tichanovskaya as the real winner.

The democracy movement has been calling for Lukashenko’s resignation for weeks, an end to police violence against peaceful demonstrators, the release of all political prisoners and new elections. The long-term president has always refused to resign or to hand over power. However, he promised a new constitution, but without giving a date for it.
