Notre-Dame choir gives Christmas concert in cathedral

On Christmas Eve, the Notre-Dame choir will give a concert in the severely damaged Parisian cathedral for the first time. The concert will take place in strict compliance with the applicable health measures and will be broadcast on television, the archdiocese announced on Monday. The event will include 20 singers from the Notre-Dame adult choir, two soloists and an organ player.

Notre-Dame Cathedral was badly damaged in 2019

A small organ is rented for the event, as the actual organ of the church is being restored. The cathedral was badly damaged in a fire in spring 2019. A milestone in the security work was achieved last week: The scaffolding on the roof of the cathedral that had melted in the fire was removed – dismantling was a difficult undertaking, and the scaffolding posed a security risk for the centuries-old building. Culture minister Roselyne Bachelot said after the dismantling that Notre-Dame was now “saved”.

After the fire, there were already small masses without an audience in the cathedral – for example at Easter. According to the Archdiocese, this is the first performance for the Notre-Dame choir after the fire. So far he had to switch to other churches in Paris. It is therefore a symbolic Christmas concert, it says in the message.

The traditional midnight mass at Christmas took place last year in a big top in the Bois de Boulogne park in the west of the French capital. French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild the world-famous attraction by 2024.
