Mick Schumacher will get an F1 cockpit, but Callum Ilott will not Zoom
For German motorsport fans this is significant in that it is very likely that the way is clear for Mick Schumacher, regardless of the outcome of the Formula 2 title fight next weekend. Haas team boss Günther Steiner had already hinted at this before the first of two Bahrain Grands Prix.
“I’ve known this for a few weeks now,” writes Ilott. “I’m disappointed, but I’ll work even harder and do what it takes to make it happen in 2022.” Postscript: “But first there is a championship that I want to win!”
Should he make up the 14 points behind Schumacher (48 are still to be awarded), the Ferrari driver academy would face a dilemma. Because the Formula 2 champion is not allowed to drive Formula 2 for another year. Ilott would then probably be parked as the third driver with one of the Ferrari customer teams (Alfa Romeo or Haas).
For Schumacher, the way to Formula 1 is clear. There has been speculation for weeks that he could drive for Haas with Nikita Masepin. An official announcement of the two is expected this week.
By the way: Sergio Perez will also speak at a press conference this evening. The Mexican was also considered a candidate for a Haas cockpit.
