For the first time, a third-party provider in Germany can access the cable infrastructure of a competitor. For years, cable providers in Germany had claimed that this was technically not possible. The takeover of Unitymedia by Vodafone apparently made the impossible possible – even if it took 18 months to implement the technology.
Wherever Vodafone has a cable connection that is internet-enabled, you can now also book an internet connection from O2 by cable. The conditions presented by O2 a month ago apply. The special thing: O2 no longer differentiates its fixed network tariffs according to whether you get your connection via cellular network, VDSL, fiber optics or now via cable. The price is always the same.
According to the provider, the system recommends the best technology for you in your home. But you should be able to change the type of connection if you attach particular importance to being supplied via a certain route.
No gigabit via O2 cable
The cable connections at O2 are currently subject to two restrictions. One is speed. While you can now book data rates of 1 Gbit / s with Vodafone in almost all households, with O2 only 250 Mbit / s are possible. This is due to the contract that O2 signed with Vodafone. It limits the bandwidth to 300 Mbit / s. In the course of the standardized tariffs, O2 decided to market the VDSL maximum 250 Mbit / s.

Booking currently restricted
The second limitation with the new O2 cable is the booking option. Because from today you can only book the connections in the O2 Shop. These are “selected” O2 shops. O2 did not provide any more details. The O2 web interface doesn’t even show you the availability. The connections should only be bookable via all sales channels “from the first quarter”.
According to O2, your connection will be transported over the Vodafone lines. But the Telefónica / O2 backbone is used. This means that the capacity of the line is identical to Vodafone. However, if you have problems with certain servers at Vodafone and their accessibility, these problems should not occur with O2.
