Party leader Baerbock open to strengthening the Bundeswehr

When it comes to defense, the Greens are traditionally cautious. Now the head of the former pacifist party is rushing forward and demanding more money for the German army.

Annalena Baerbock, chairman of the Greens, has shown herself to be open to thinking about higher spending on defense and the armed forces: “There is a lack of night vision devices for practicing, not to mention flying lessons. We have to be honest. Yes, in some areas we have to invest more , so that rifles shoot and night vision devices work, “said Baerbock of the” Süddeutsche Zeitung “.

In the event of Green government participation, the Green leader announced talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, including about robust European military operations. “It won’t be easy. But we mustn’t duck back,” she said.

Baerbock calls for greater commitment from Europe

Before the change of presidency in the USA, Baerbock called for a stronger joint European commitment in defense policy: “Europe has been revolving around itself for years, the Trump administration has turned its back on the world. The void that has arisen is being filled by authoritarian states.”

If the West does not want to leave the field to states like China, Russia or Turkey, Europe must take its “peace role” in the world more seriously again. In view of the imminent entry of the US Democrat Joe Biden into the White House, Baerbock pleaded for a new way of working with the US.

Regarding the dispute over armaments expenditure – Germany is well below the two percent of gross domestic product agreed with NATO, which Biden will probably also demand – Baerbock said: “We have to talk about a strategic realignment first, then about the expenditure NATO’s capabilities and the specific burden-sharing work. A theoretical two percent target doesn’t really help. ”
