The game began tragically: after a corner kick in the fifth minute, David Luiz and Raúl Jiménez clashed – it was followed by a ten-minute break. While Luiz, who had suffered a cut on the forehead, was able to continue playing with a bandage, Jiménez had to be carefully taken from the field on a stretcher and immediately to a hospital.
In the end, Wolverhamton Wanderers won 2-1 (0-0) at Arsenal FC. The Wolves had to wait 41 years for this.
The incident had no noticeable impact on the performance of the Wolves, they even took the lead: Leander Dendoncker headed the crossbar after a fine Traoré cross before Pedro Neto pushed in (27th minute of play). But the answer followed quickly: Following a corner, Gabriel hit a header to equalize (30th).
There were defensive gaps on both sides and the guests had more dangerous offensive actions. Dendoncker failed with his head to Leno (34.), Pedro Neto suffered the same. But because Daniel Podence followed up, took the rebound, then prevailed against Gabriel and ultimately pushed in (42nd), the guests went with a lead into the break.
After the restart, Arsenal acted more joyfully and started to play harder when the opponent had possession of the ball. However, there were no notable kills. It was the third home defeat in a row for Mikel Arteta’s team. Arsenal, currently 14th in the table, have lost their connection to the European Cup places.
