The number of Corona cases in Berlin care facilities has increased dramatically. A care flat share in Mitte makes serious accusations to the health department.

Mitte is the Corona hotspot – has the health department grown or is now hopelessly overwhelmed? A case that has just become known raises doubts: In mid-November, nine people in a care shared apartment in the district were infected with the corona virus. When the home management wanted to report this to the health department, no one was available there for days.

Finally she had the community evacuated herself with the help of the fire department. The RBB had reported about it first. The district office confirmed the incident when asked by the Tagesspiegel.

The nursing management described the incident to the RBB as “a week of horror”. They called the health department for six days – without success. Employees were also infected.

The responsible district councilor Ephraim Gothe (SPD) regrets the incident. This certainly has serious consequences for the people in the care shared apartment. In fact, the health department’s hotline is currently overloaded and difficult to reach. Normally, care facilities would contact him directly or report corona cases by email, fax or a special contact form. This did not happen in this case.

Two people have now died as a result of their corona infection, the district office announced on Monday. A total of seven people lived in the facility, all but two were infected. The health department now wants to check how the virus could spread there so quickly.

The case shows how important it is to contact the health department quickly. That is why the central district office now wants to set up an additional line only for care facilities and send an information sheet to all facilities. Because anyone who previously called up the homepage of the health department saw only the number of the hotline there. Only now has an information box for care facilities and schools been added.

84 new infections and six deaths in one day

“A little late,” thinks the chairman of the health committee in the middle, Rüdiger Lötzer (left). It is regrettable that there have not been better contact options earlier. Especially since the protection of high-risk patients, as in the care shared flat, is a priority.

A circular from the Senate Administration that is available to the Tagesspiegel shows how dramatic the situation is in the nursing homes at the moment. The number of infected home residents has increased dramatically since the end of October.

Berlin-wide (as of November 14) 699 residents in 212 care facilities were infected. In addition, 355 employees had the virus at the same time. There were 84 new infections and six deaths within one day.
