Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) speaks of “slight declines for a few days”, but still a “dramatically high level”. The number of hospital patients has increased.
The number of new corona infections detected in Austria within 24 hours fell below the 3000 mark for the first time on Monday with 2,748 cases. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) spoke at a press conference on the Corona app in Vienna of “slight declines for a few days”, but a “dramatically high level”.
The confirmed new infections are always lower on Mondays because laboratories feed fewer test results into the EMS epidemiological reporting system over the weekend than on weekdays. Anschober therefore presented a comparison of the previous assembly in November, the month with the “massively highest values” in the context of the pandemic in Austria. According to the minister, 5,993 new cases were registered on the first Monday of the month, a week later there were 4657, then 4135 on November 16, 3145 on last Monday and now, on the last of the month, 2748.
Number of hospital patients increased
Getting below the 3000 mark is “good and should give us motivation,” said the head of department. However, only around 15,000 tests were registered, significantly fewer than the November average, where almost 30,000 tests per day were recorded.
Fortunately, the number of recoveries was significantly higher than the number of new infections: According to Anschober, it was 4694 within 24 hours. However, 79 deaths have also occurred since Sunday. In hospitals, the number of Covid 19 patients increased by 89, in intensive care units by ten to a total of 701 seriously ill patients.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, there have been a total of 282,456 infections with SARS-CoV-2 and 3184 deaths in connection with it since the start of the pandemic in Austria. According to this information, the number of people recovered rose to a total of 221,692. On Monday, 3,639 normal beds in hospitals across Austria were occupied with corona patients.
