The word of the year should represent the political, economic and social life of a year. What shaped the year 2020 is undisputed: The corona pandemic will now also be remembered linguistically.
The German Language Society (GfdS) has chosen the term “corona pandemic” as word of the year 2020. In terms of language, the term stands for a multitude of new word formations, the jury justified its decision. Eight of the ten selected terms are related to the coronavirus, the dominant topic of the year. “Lockdown” landed in second place, as the company announced.
During the campaign, a jury regularly selects ten words and phrases that linguistically determined the political, economic and social life of a year in a special way. The terms come from a collection of several thousand specimens from various media and submissions from outsiders. Last year, “Respectives” was chosen as word of the year, and in 2018 it was “hot time”.

The GfdS has been awarding the “Word of the Year” regularly since 1977. According to her, it is not the frequency of an expression that is decisive for the selection, but its significance and popularity. The selected words are therefore not associated with any rating or recommendation.
