Sturm Graz: humble on the wave of success

Coach Christian Ilzer breathed aggressiveness into the Styrians.

Graz. Sturm Graz’s record in the past few weeks is impressive. Five of the last six competitive games were won, the 1-0 home win against WSG Tirol meant the third win within eight days. Fourth place in the Bundesliga, moved into the quarter-finals in the ÖFB Cup – little reason to complain for coach Christian Ilzer.

Nevertheless, the Styrian was reluctant. “In terms of results, it’s very nice, we’re getting better and better at the top. But I look at things and how they develop, ”said the 43-year-old. “It is important for me to keep a clear view of the whole. There is much to do.”

Direction of view upwards

In fact, Sturm did not deliver a great performance against the WSG. The turnaround came thanks to two jokers – Otar Kiteishvili livened up the offensive game and Bekim Balaj scored the gold goal.

Like their coach, the storm professionals also demanded a level-headed reaction to the latest successes. Captain Stefan Hierländer emphasized: “We have to continue to live the word ‘humility’, which I have used so much. We haven’t achieved much yet and have to keep working. We’re in good shape and we mustn’t let that be taken from our plates, ”demanded the midfielder. “We have to stay on the ground.”

Despite all the modesty, you can also feel the relief that a significant increase is noticeable after the completely botched spring. “Those are exactly the weeks that you need, especially after the last championship round,” said goalie Jörg Siebenhandl. And Jakob Jantscher said: “Now we have to stick with it.” (Red.)
