BerlinHealth Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) has spoken out in favor of teachers carrying out rapid corona tests themselves in the near future. In the health committee of the House of Representatives, she said that there was a corresponding meeting of the health ministers of the countries. The basis is a model project from Hessen. The federal states have asked the federal government to clarify the legal framework so that the rapid tests can be used as self-tests. There will be instructions on how to use the tests correctly.
The SPD politician sees Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) on the train. The six million tests that have been carried out in Berlin this year since November are also intended for the educational sector – including teaching staff, according to Kalayci. At the moment, however, only qualified personnel are allowed to test, she explained. This has to be clarified in the Federal Ministry of Health so that the framework can be changed. In Berlin, schools and daycare centers are already being considered when planning the requirements for the use of rapid tests in Berlin, but not yet in the national test strategy, the Senate administration said on Monday.
1.1 million rapid tests already distributed
It looks different in the area of care. There, the requirement that only medical personnel may carry out the tests has now been relaxed. Nursing assistants are now also allowed to carry out tests.
The nursing homes in Berlin are now being supplied with rapid tests. “You have first priority,” said Moritz Quiske, spokesman for the Senate Department for Health, Nursing and Equality, on Monday. Corona had broken out in several facilities in recent weeks, and 15 people died within five weeks in a home in Lichtenberg two weeks of rapid tests available – as well as in other homes. According to the Senate Administration, more than 1,000 orders have already been processed and 1.1 million rapid tests have been distributed. A further 2.7 million rapid tests are in stock and can be retrieved from the facilities. In addition, another 10 are planned Millions of rapid tests are ordered The calculation variable with which the need for rapid tests is calculated is 20 tests per resident per month in nursing homes.
At the beginning of November, the main committee of the Berlin House of Representatives decided on funding of over 70 million euros by 2021, with which the Senate Department for Health, Care and Equality is to procure over 12 million rapid antigen tests by 2021. The six million rapid tests planned for this year will cost around 33 million euros.
No all-clear for infection numbers
The corona situation in Berlin has relaxed a little, Kalayci said on Monday – but the number of new infections must drop significantly in the city and nationwide. There is absolutely no all-clear. In Berlin, around every fourth intensive care bed is now occupied by a Covid 19 patient. The control of the patients works, however, even if there could be temporary bottlenecks in individual hospitals, said the SPD politician. There are still 210 intensive care beds available. In addition, the clinics could activate 270 more beds within 24 hours. The hospitals would have additional capacities for the “very, very bad emergency”. Berlin also has a reserve hospital. The Berlin Corona traffic light temporarily switched to red for the criterion of intensive care bed occupancy for the first time since its introduction in May.
