With an average temperature of 10.3 degrees, this autumn was the fourth warmest in Germany since weather records began in 1881.
This was announced by the German Weather Service (DWD) in its preliminary assessment after the first evaluations of the results from around 2000 measuring stations. Only the year 2006 recorded a warmer autumn with an average of 12 degrees, 2012 with an average of 11.1 degrees and 1982 with 10.4 degrees in the months of September, October and November. According to the information, autumn 2020 was 1.5 degrees above the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990. Compared to the warmer period 1981 to 2010, the plus was 1.3 degrees.
According to the DWD, the late summer weather in the first half of September contributed to the values - in the middle of the month there were again highs of well over 30 degrees. Trier-Petrisberg even reported a midsummer 34.8 degrees on September 15th.
It was only in October that it got really cool with local light night frosts, they said. In the last third of November, the ex-hurricane “Eta” finally marked the end of the mild temperatures. Bad Königshofen registered the nationwide lowest autumn value on November 30th with minus 9.2 degrees.
Like the changeable summer, autumn was too warm and rather too dry. On average, 150 liters of precipitation per square meter fell from September to November – the target value is 182 liters per square meter. Most of the precipitation in the entire autumn fell with up to 480 liters per square meter in the Black Forest and on the immediate edge of the Alps. The areas with the lowest rainfall were in the middle of Germany, according to the DWD.
The sun, on the other hand, was often seen quite extensively: at around 365 hours, the duration of sunshine was 15 percent above its target value of 311 hours. The sun was longest in the extreme south and in the Leipzig lowland bay with locally over 450 hours.
The far north of Germany, on the other hand, received relatively little sunshine, sometimes under 270 hours. With the weather triad “too warm, too sunny, too dry”, autumn 2020 followed similar evaluations from spring and summer.
