In view of the continued high number of new corona infections and deaths, several federal states are tightening their protective measures.
In Saxony, Prime Minister Kretschmer said that schools, daycare centers and large parts of the retail sector will be closed from next Monday. The only exceptions are for everyday goods. The reason is the very high number of infections in Saxony.
In Thuringia, the contact restrictions for the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve should not be relaxed after all; in Rhineland-Palatinate only at Christmas. The Saarland state government is sticking to the easing, but has issued a ban on alcohol in busy squares and streets on Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. In Baden-Württemberg, serving alcohol in the open air is generally to be banned until further notice. Hessen imposed a night curfew in corona hot spots from Friday.
The National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina advocated using the Christmas season and the turn of the year for a tough lockdown. First of all, compulsory schooling should be lifted from December 14th and citizens should work from home if possible. From Christmas until at least January 10, 2021, public life should then largely rest.
