Berlin (dpa / bb) – The Bundestag is getting a new office building, which is to be built from prefabricated wooden modules on seven floors. The new building according to plans by the architects Sauerbruch Hutton will house around 400 offices and be ready by the end of 2021, announced the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) on Tuesday. The building is being built in the vicinity of the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus of the Bundestag on the so-called Luisenblock West west of Luisenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte.
A glass facade is intended to close off the high-rise building from the S-Bahn line to the north and open up to a green lounge area. The building materials – solid wood and reinforced concrete – should remain visible, said the BBR. The prefabricated modules can be assembled on site. They should already contain parts of the building services, windows and even floor coverings.
