As several media reported, a further closure of large parts of the trade and exit restrictions are in the room until January 17th, plus online lessons for students after the holidays. It is unclear what will happen to the ski resorts that should open on December 24th.
From January 18, according to the plans, in addition to schools and retailers, the catering trade, which has been closed since the beginning of November, should reopen – however, as reported by the Austrian news agency APA from negotiating circles, possibly only for people who will then take part in a second round of Corona -Mass tests received a negative test result. Those who do not take part would have to stay at home for another week.
Austria only reopened its shops and schools nationwide on December 7th after a three-week closure with exit rules around the clock. Culture, gastronomy, hotels and most leisure facilities have been closed since the beginning of November, and since then there has been an evening exit restriction with exceptions only for valid reasons, which also include outdoor recreation.
The corona infection numbers, which reached new record values every day before the second lockdown, have fallen significantly since then, but have recently stagnated. In the past seven days, Austria still had 206 infections per 100,000 inhabitants as of Friday; in mid-November there were still over 550.
However, experts such as the government’s Corona Commission warn of a significant increase over the holidays. Around 500 of the up to 850 available intensive care beds for corona patients are currently occupied.
