Chinese corona vaccine has 79 percent effectiveness

With the pharmaceutical company Sinopharm, a manufacturer in China has now announced details of the effectiveness of its corona vaccine for the first time.

As the company announced on Wednesday, the vaccine should offer approximately 79 percent protection against Covid-19 (79.34 percent). The publication of the data is an important step for the final approval of the vaccine, of which states outside of China have already secured doses.

In China itself there are three other companies in addition to Sinopharm, Anhui Zhifei Longcom, CanSino, and Sinovac, which are in the final phase of vaccine development. So far none of the companies has been granted final approval in Germany.

China had set the goal of being able to bring 600 million cans onto the market by the end of the year. Most recently, state media also spoke of wanting to vaccinate 50 million Chinese by mid-February.

For months now, restricted vaccinations have been carried out in China for certain population groups – for example by members of the military and clinic staff, but also by diplomats and employees of state corporations – even without final approval.

According to the data published on Wednesday, the Chinese preparation is less effective than the so-called mRNA vaccines from Pfizer / Biontech and Moderna, which, according to the manufacturers, have an effectiveness of 95 percent.
