Lower Saxony Association of Cities wants help for dealers
The Lower Saxony Association of Cities is calling for help from the state to save retailers and restaurateurs. This was reported by NDR 1 Lower Saxony today. According to a city council spokesman, the corona requirements have a massive impact on city centers. The association is in favor of retailers being allowed to open until midnight on the last two Thursdays before Christmas Eve. There could also be vouchers for local shops. In addition, the City Council is calling for an immediate program of 70 million euros from the state.
231 more corona cases in Hamburg
In Hamburg, too, the confirmed new corona infections remain at a comparatively high level: After 347 new cases reported yesterday and 104 a week ago, according to the authorities there are 231 today. It should be noted that the numbers are usually lower on Sundays and Mondays than on the other days of the week, as there is less testing and evaluation and fewer results are transmitted to the authorities. The seven-day incidence value rose to 112.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the Hanseatic city and is thus still well above the limit value for risk areas of 50.0 to be reported.
Two NDR filmmakers receive a prize for Corona “Lockdown” documentary
How was it actually in spring 2020 when extensive corona protective measures came into force for the first time and largely paralyzed life in Hamburg too? Two NDR filmmakers have made a documentary about it – and for this 30-minute film they are now being honored with a media prize from the German Association of Journalists. Here we link the excellent piece of contemporary history as a video:
Authorities confirm 874 new infections in Lower Saxony
In Lower Saxony, the number of confirmed corona infections has risen by 874 to a total of 77,575 within 24 hours. For comparison: Last Sunday 943 new infections were reported. The seven-day incidence (new cases per 100,000 population) fell slightly to 79.0, according to health officials. Most new infections were recorded in the Hanover region (+135), in the Osnabrück district (+66) and in the Cloppenburg district (+64) – the incidence value is currently highest there (195.1). There are six more deaths related to Covid 19 disease across the country.
Comment: How long will the home office trend last?
One finding of the Corona period, which will remain after the pandemic, is this one: The home office is an alternative to the office workplace in the company. But what are the effects of this “boom” in the home office? This is what the freelance author Cora Stephan thinks about in the NDR Info weekly commentary “The Opinion”.
The school preparation project runs a little differently in Corona times
The corona pandemic also has consequences for the preparation of preschool children for the “seriousness of life”, the start of school next summer. For example, visits to the children and their parents as part of the “Hippy” accompanying project are currently only taking place outside in Ratzeburg in Schleswig-Holstein (Duchy of Lauenburg). The goal remains unchanged: the little ones are introduced to the first class in a playful way. Among other things, the “Hippy” project will benefit from donations that the NDR campaign “Hand in Hand for Northern Germany” is collecting these days.
Scholz agrees to reimbursement for event cancellations
Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) encourages artists and companies to plan events again for the second half of the coming year. At the same time, he promised reimbursement of the costs if they had to be canceled due to the corona. Scholz told the “Tagesspiegel” that he wanted to use this measure to encourage concert organizers to get started again. Otherwise the pandemic would eventually be over, but there would be no concerts. In addition, the whole machinery with the many solo freelancers and musicians get going again.
Hospitals are reaching their limits
In view of the increasing stress from corona patients, some hospitals in Germany are reaching their limits. In individual federal states such as Saxony, the number of intensive care patients is five times as high as in April, said the President of the German Hospital Association, Gerald Gass, of “Welt am Sonntag”. Clinics there were reaching their capacity limits or had already exceeded them. Accordingly, there are currently 40 percent more Covid 19 patients in intensive care units across Germany than in the spring. It is not the intensive care beds that are the limiting factor, but the appropriately qualified staff.
The following map gives an overview of the utilization of intensive care units throughout Germany. Further information can also be found on the linked page of the NDR Data team.
More than 17,700 new infections registered in Germany
In Germany, more than 17,767 new infections with the corona virus were recorded within one day. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced this early this morning, citing information from the health authorities. That was almost 3,100 more than last Sunday (14,611). Since not all health authorities transmit data at the weekend, the number of cases reported by the RKI is usually lower on Sundays and Mondays than on other days of the week. The number of deaths related to the corona virus in Germany rose by 255 to 18,772.
234 new corona cases reported in Schleswig-Holstein
According to the state government, 234 new corona cases were reported in Schleswig-Holstein within one day. Yesterday, a new daily high was registered with 318 new infections in the state. On Sunday a week ago, 219 new corona cases were reported in Schleswig-Holstein. The country recently gave the seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants at 48.9 – just below the limit to be considered a risk area.
