Corona rules: Caribbean cruise of Mein Schiff 1 from Hamburg canceled

Hamburg. The plan was bold, but it apparently convinced many fans of Tui Cruises: After the Hamburg shipping company since the first Corona-Lockdown welcomed a good 45,000 passengers on specially shielded trips in northern and southern Europe in spring, it should now be on an extraordinary Christmas and New Year trip with the “My ship 1” go – from Hamburg to the Caribbean and back with all men (and women) on board.

In addition to many days at sea, the 35-day trip promised up to nine state parliaments on Caribbean beaches, presumably on private islands that are otherwise used by Royal Caribbean, one of the two parent companies of Tui Cruises.

“Mein Schiff 1”: Caribbean cruise was fully booked according to Corona rules

A spokeswoman for the shipping company confirmed to the evening paper that the trip could no longer take place – and that it was fully booked. In Corona times, however, fully booked does not mean that a ship is 100 percent occupied, as the industry has imposed a limit of 60 percent on itself in its hygiene concepts.

In addition, all passengers would have had to undergo two corona tests: a PCR test before arrival and a rapid antigen test before boarding. The crew has already been tested and would also be isolated in a 14-day quarantine before departure.

Hamburg prohibits cruises from Tui Cruises

The trip with the “Mein Schiff 1” should have started on December 10th. Shortly before Christmas they wanted to reach a private island in the Caribbean, so that many of those booked were looking forward to holidays under the palm trees. The shipping company promised “loving details, small surprises and festive menus” to create an atmospheric atmosphere. “Workshops and performances by guest artists” should also help to get through the trip, which lasted more than a month, without getting bored.

But nothing will come of it now, probably also because German politicians have just extended the lockdown light to January 10, 2021 and hotels are not allowed to open to holidaymakers for that long. The fact that you can still take a plane in Hamburg, for example to fly to the Canary Islands or (with a change) to the Caribbean, did not play a role in the city’s decision against the cruise.

Tui Cruises cannot depart from any German port

Tui Cruises regrets having to cancel the trip, today with the following statement: “Due to the current infection situation, the federal and state governments yesterday decided to extend the corona measures until January 10th. We have just received the news that all German ports are now refusing the planned departure for December. With a heavy heart we have to cancel the 35-day Caribbean trip from December 10th to January 14th. In order to still enable the booked guests a vacation, we offer them a trip on the three-week Canary Islands cruise from December 17th at a special price. “
