When are corona infected people contagious – and how long? Scottish researchers have now investigated these questions – with alarming results.
NRW – Protective masks, Etiquette, Quarantine: This official activities to contain the Corona-Virus are now part of everyday life for almost everyone. Although authorities and that Robert Koch Institute are currently doing a lot of Corona education work, many people are unsettled.
|Main routes of transmission||Droplets / aerosols|
|Symptoms||Cough, fever, loss of smell and taste|
Corona pandemic: Duration of the risk of infection from Covid-19 still unclear
In particular the duration of the Risk of infection from COVID-19 is unclear. In the most comprehensive comparative study to date, a research team from Scotland has now compared the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 with the other coronaviruses SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV.
Your goal: to find out what that Virus so contagious makes how long you are still a danger to others with Corona and whether Infected with no symptoms are less contagious than those with severe disease.
COVID-19: The course of the disease varies greatly – from fatal courses to asymptomatic infections
Crucial to the development of Symptoms is the so-called incubation period, so the time of the infection on the outbreak of Covid-19 symptoms. The RKI goes from one mean incubation period from 5 to 6 days.
Most infected people develop symptoms during this time. Basically, however: The maximum incubation time is 14 days – up to two weeks after the infection consequently, complaints can arise.
According to the RKI, the most common symptoms of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 triggered Disease COVID-19 counting fever and runny nose – as well as the corona typical Loss of smell and taste. The course of the disease varies greatly: Beside difficult coursesthat to Lung failure and death are also total symptom-free infections possible.
More contagious than SARS or MERS: Covid-19 is spreading particularly quickly
Already at the beginning of the pandemic grasslands Virologen point out that as one carrier of the Corona-Virus can also be symptom-free – and yet contagious. The corona virus is also according to the Robert Koch Institute much more contagious than SARS or MERS, which are also caused by coronaviruses.
The reason for this is the particularly rapid spread over Droplets / aerosols. The Human-to-human transmission is particularly easy here – for example through:
- To cough,
- or even speaking.
According to the RKI, it is not yet certain how long infected people really contagious are.
Research team reveals: Why the new coronavirus is particularly treacherous
The doctor and researcher Muge Cevik from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and her colleagues have come a step closer to the answer to this question. They compared 80 studies on SARS, MERS and Covid-19 to identify the specifics of the novel Coronavirus to explore and important findings about the Risk of contagion to win.
The scientist found the virus in the first days is most contagious after a person becomes infected. Because this is the time Viruslast (i.e. the detection of corona viruses) is particularly high in the upper respiratory tract. As fast as possible spread the Viruses between day three and five – so before the fifth day after the infection!
Accordingly, it is important infected people if possible identify early. But this is exactly what is difficult, since most of those affected only develop symptoms after day 5. The researcher sees another reason for this here rapid expansion from Covid-19 (more news about the corona virus in NRW on RUHR24.de).
Corona: are infected people with mild symptoms less contagious?
Dr. Cevik concludes that “People just as infectious without symptoms are like people with symptoms, but possibly for a shorter period of time. ”She confirms the fears that without symptoms one can get a potential danger can be for others without knowing it.
People with mild courses may just not be contagious for that long. However, the data are not sufficient to initiate changes to the guidelines for the quarantine period.
Coronavirus is still detected after weeks – how long are you contagious?
The researchers were able to follow up if the disease was severe several weeks after an infection Virus genes in the body prove. A particularly high risk of infection but apparently only persists until day nine after infection.
The researchers did not detect any viruses that were contagious in any of the samples taken after this point in time. However, no hasty conclusions should be drawn from this. Further studies are necessary for more specific statements.
Corona study with new findings – the most important facts at a glance
The researchers draw the following conclusions from their results:
- The Risk of contagion is particularly high at the beginning (up to day five).
- Therefore, it is important to detect infections early. (Which is difficult, because the symptoms usually come on later.)
- The Virus can be accordingly spread particularly quickly.
- Infected with no or mild symptoms are also contagious.

Risk of infection by Corona – what to watch out for in quarantine
Anyone who is considered potentially contagious because, for example Contact with an infected person had to be in quarantine – since December there have been new rules in NRW. Due to the increased Risk of infection from Corona, the Robert Koch Institute urgently recommends adhering to the quarantine and hygiene rules, even if you have no symptoms.
The Duration the Corona-Quarantäne is from the respective Health department set. Important to know: A quarantine does not end automatically, but has to be officially lifted by the responsible office.
Usually this applies quarantine for two weeks what’s in the incubation period, justified. Also the typical hygiene rules such as frequent hand washing for at least 30 seconds, regular ventilation and wearing one Mouth and nose protection in contact with other household members should be observed in quarantine.
