Striker Sasa Kalajdzic brought the VfB Stuttgart a successful year-end and led his team into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. The SC Freiburg failed because of its harmlessness.
Thanks to a goal by the Austrian national player in the 15th minute, the Swabians won 1-0 (1-0) against their Baden rival SC Freiburg on Wednesday (23.12.2020). It is the culmination of a strong year at VfB.
As a climber, he is in a respectable seventh place in the table in the Bundesliga during the winter break – and he is now also in the cup in the round of the last 16 teams.
“Fought and passion shown”
Kalajdzic spoke of a “great win” and admitted that he didn’t want to hit the ball when he scored.
VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was correspondingly satisfied in the Sportschau interview: “We played really good football in the first half, it was worth seeing. In the second half we fought and showed a lot of passion,” said the coach and took stock: “We are on the right track. We grow with every success. I look forward to more. “
Freiburg’s Christian Günter, on the other hand, said disappointed: “We didn’t take advantage of our chances in the second half. We had things on our toes. The better team didn’t necessarily win.”
Further development at VfB clearly recognizable
For the last form strong Freiburg is the third time in a row in the second round. Just over three months ago, the sports club stole three points from Stuttgart at the start of the season and took a 3-0 lead after just 48 minutes. The fact that VfB has developed considerably since then became clear in the last competitive game of the year. The Swabians had the action much better under control this time and hardly allowed the Freiburg offensive to develop in the first half.
Even though top goal scorer Silas Wamangituka, who has already scored eight goals in competitive matches, had to pass this time with knee problems, the attacking game from Stuttgart worked. The opening goal was particularly worth seeing.
Strong combination in front of the winning goal
Via Tanguy Coulibaly, Mateo Klimowicz and Gonzalo Castro, VfB combined through the Freiburg back team before Kalajdzic finally completed the attack with the goal. The Austrian is currently in good shape, which was also noticed by Freiburg coach Christian Streich. In the 2-2 draw against Union Berlin, Kalajdzic was recently “almost world class” with his two joker goals.
And also in the other scenes of this cup duel it was mostly dangerous when Kalajdzic was involved (19th and 22nd). Streich didn’t like the appearance of the Breisgauers at all, on the sidelines the coach showed significantly more commitment than his players. The most noticeable scene in Freiburg was a tussle with Pascal Stenzel triggered by Vincenzo Grifo shortly before the break (45th).
Number two in goal for both teams
In the second half, too, VfB tried to get rid of its home situation from the Bundesliga (four draws, two defeats). Benjamin Uphoff was able to parry a long-range shot from Orel Mangala (53.). The keeper stood between the posts for regular Florian Müller, and this time the actual number two Fabian Bredlow was also given preference at VfB.
Bredlow had a long idle evening before giving the guests a chance when he let the ball slip out of his hands (60th). Ermedin Demirovic almost got the beneficiary. It was the starting shot for a good Freiburg phase, in which Grifo had another big chance (64th) and Bredlow wobbled again (71th). But the keeper was there when Demirovic shot (81st). On the other side, Kalajdzic (71st) and Mangala (72nd) missed the preliminary decision.
For the Freiburg team, the game at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim will continue on the Saturday after the New Year (January 2nd, 2021). The Stuttgart are challenged against RB Leipzig on the evening of the same day.
