Vorarlberg cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr has built a tricable cable car to the Eiger glacier for Jungfrau Railways in Grindelwald (Swiss canton Bern). The so-called “Eiger Express” will open on Saturday, Doppelmayr informed on Friday. The new lift overcomes a height difference of around 1.4 kilometers over a length of almost 6.5 kilometers. A price of 470 million francs (around 434 million euros) was reported in the media.
The “Eiger Express” is the heart of the major V-Bahn project, which combines the regional train with a new public transport connection, a ten-person gondola that opened last year, and the “Eiger Express” as a state-of-the-art mobility center. Urs Kessler, Director of Jungfrau Railways, spoke of a “masterpiece of all those involved” after 908 days of construction. The V-Bahn ensures the successful future of the entire Jungfrau region as a year-round destination in Swiss tourism in the medium and long term.
