George Russell (Mercedes): “It really hurts” / Formula 1

Lewis Hamilton replacement George Russell was inconsolable after the Sakhir GP: 59 laps long, almost everything done right, but only ninth due to a Mercedes breakdown and bad luck: “It hurts a lot.”

For a long time in the desert of Sakhir it looked as if the 110th winner in Formula 1 would be George Russell. The 22-year-old Englishman led the second round of the World Championship in Bahrain as if he had never done anything else in his life. Lewis Hamilton’s substitute (suffering from Corona) was about to write a new Formula 1 fairy tale – first world championship points in the form of a win, something that only Giancarlo Baghetti had previously achieved in Reims (France) in 1961.

But then everything went wrong: tire mess at Mercedes, then another stop because of a flat tire, in the end the Briton was only ninth, still behind that Valtteri Bottas, which he had easily under control, of course George was inconsolable.

«I can hardly believe what happened in Bahrain. But despite the mishap at the pit stop, I still believed in victory. I had dropped back to 5th place, but my speed was right. I ran my heart out, I was a little more than two seconds behind Sergio Pérez, I was fully charged and I was grimly determined to steal the lead from him. There were still ten laps to go, it would have been tight, but I’m convinced I could have done it. And then the radio message came that I had a flat tire. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. ”

«If I had been told before the weekend that I would score, I would have been happy about a good result. But when you lead a race and lose the win that way, it hurts a hell of a lot. ”

There was consolation on the phone from his family. George goes on to say, “I think mother was crying, she couldn’t make a sound and gave the phone to my father. He said, ‘Boy, we’re very proud of you, that was your day.’ I thought that was nice. ”

“Ultimately, I have to leave with my head held high, because I could have been eliminated through a mistake, like in Imola. Or it could have shown that I’m not at the necessary speed. Then I would certainly have been dissatisfied with myself. As it is, I know, despite all the disappointment: I have nothing to blame, I showed a good weekend. I know that the more experience I have in this car will only get stronger. ”

It is not yet clear whether Russell will get a second chance in the world champion Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton wants to compete in the World Cup final after his corona illness.

George Russell: “Around the middle of the race I found myself thinking, ‘this is too good to be true’. As it turned out, it really was. “
