“I feel incredibly privileged to be the first person to be vaccinated against Covid-19,” said the elderly. Great Britain is the country most affected by the lung disease Covid-19 in Europe with over 61,000 deaths. It approved the Pfizer / Biontech drug for mass vaccination ahead of other European countries and the US.
First corona vaccinations in Great Britain
Vaccinations from other companies are also about to complete the approval process in several countries. In Germany, the head of the Chancellery, Helge Braun, expects that mass vaccinations can begin in the coming year. The Standing Vaccination Commission recommends that old people, residents and employees of nursing homes as well as staff in emergency rooms, transplant medicine and elderly care be immunized against the coronavirus first.
The country has ordered a total of 40 million doses, which means that 20 million British people can be vaccinated – that’s a little less than a third of the population. For most people, however, it will be well into the New Year before they can be vaccinated, the NHS said. A government spokesman said the majority of vulnerable people will be vaccinated in January or February. Authorities stressed that the vaccine was “safe and effective”.
Emergency approval for vaccine
In the past week, Great Britain rushed ahead and approved the vaccine earlier than all EU countries by means of emergency approval. Russia started large-scale vaccinations against the coronavirus in its capital Moscow over the weekend, making it one of the first countries in the world to have its population vaccinated against the lung disease Covid-19 on a larger scale. Vaccinations are already being used in China.
