Accordingly, 3425 residents of nursing homes have been infected with the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. At the beginning of December, the health administration last announced comparable figures. At that time, the health authorities had reported 2050 infections in homes. Almost 1,400 new infections were added within just two weeks.
The figures confirm a trend that can end fatally for many residents of nursing homes: In the second wave of corona, nursing homes moved to the center of the pandemic. In the first eight months of the pandemic until mid-November, only 1,021 people in homes were infected.
Because the virus is rampant in nursing homes, the number of corona deaths is also increasing in Berlin. On Tuesday, the health administration reported a sad record with 53 deaths in one day. Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) pointed out in the Senate press conference that the death rate in Berlin had risen to 1.1. The trend continues to rise.
In fact, more than every second corona death can be traced back to outbreaks in homes. According to the health administration, 492 residents of homes have died of or with Covid 19 disease so far. There are a total of 899 deaths in Berlin and the city on Tuesday evening.
Many nurses also become infected
„There is now no major institution that is not affected“, Said the City Councilor for Health from Mitte, Ephraim Gothe (SPD). In his district, the health department is therefore only concentrating on the homes that become schools for example no longer looked after. The infections are “alarming”, said Gothe.

The figures from the health administration confirm this: there have been corona cases in 295 facilities since the beginning of the pandemic. For comparison: two weeks ago, 223 stations were affected.
This also affects the nursing staff in the facilities. So far, according to the health administration, 1,619 employees have been infected with the virus. How many died from it is unclear.
Caregiver describes catastrophic conditions
But it happens again and again – for example in the biggest outbreak to date in a Berlin nursing home, the “Golden Heart” in Mitte. 23 people, including a nurse, died there as a result of a corona outbreak. In the meantime, a nurse from the facility has anonymously contacted Tagesspiegel: “Before the outbreak, until November 20th, no hygiene measures were enforced and no further measures such as the mask requirement were continuously monitored by the management. Employees worked without protective clothing or gloves and went on duty despite having a cold, following instructions from the home management. ”

The outbreak in the “Golden Heart” now occupies the home supervision. The health senator Kalayci said on Tuesday that the home management was being dismissed. Home supervision is now also involved in a domicil facility in Reinickendorf, where more than 80 residents were infected. The home management had admitted that they had not isolated positively infected people from double rooms.
For the relatives who make further accusations to the home management, this is probably only a small consolation. On Tuesday, the number of corona deaths from the Domicil home rose from 12 to 14.
