Collaboration for another five years until 2027
Vienna (OTS) – The New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic on ORF is guaranteed – not only on January 1, 2021. The current contract, which runs until 2022 inclusive, on the successful collaboration of the orchestra with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, which regulates the transmission of the world’s two largest classical events, New Year’s Concert and Summer Night’s Concert was extended today, on Monday, December 28th, 2020, in the Wiener Musikverein for a further five years. This means that ORF audiences are guaranteed great philharmonic musical enjoyment on New Year’s days or in early summer from the baroque gardens of Schönbrunn Palace until 2027. The ORF productions of both concert events are followed by millions of people worldwide.
ORF General Director Dr. Alexander Wrabetz:
“It fills me with great pleasure that the ORF and the Vienna Philharmonic are extending their excellent long-term successful partnership in the field of New Year’s and Summer Night’s concerts for another five years. This ensures that the most important musical ambassadors of our country reach the largest possible audience – in Austria as well as worldwide – and, thanks to the ORF broadcasts, are shown to their best advantage at the highest technical level. Millions of people in more than 90 countries have the opportunity every year to experience this top orchestra and thus Austrian culture and identity from its most beautiful side. I would like to thank everyone involved for the good cooperation. “
Professor Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic:
“The Vienna Philharmonic is pleased that the excellent partnership with ORF can be extended. It is a token of the greatest appreciation. Our common focus remains on meeting the highest quality standards. Especially in challenging times like these, there is no substitute for trusting, reliable cooperation. “
Details on the cooperation between ORF and Vienna Philharmonic
Since January 1, 1959, the ORF has been broadcasting the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic, which will celebrate its 80th anniversary on January 1, 2021 (81st concert, 63rd ORF broadcast). At the summer night concert, which was called “Concert for Europe” from 2004 to 2007, ORF has been the host broadcaster from the start. Both events now delight millions of TV viewers in more than 90 countries around the world every year. Without the medium of television, this outstanding success would be unimaginable.
The contract between the Vienna Philharmonic and ORF regulates the transmission of both concerts via TV and radio (as well as online as live stream and video-on-demand): ORF takes over the (live) production and in return receives the TV broadcasting rights for Austria , South Tyrol and 3sat as well as radio rights. The traditional ballet interludes, also produced by ORF, and the ORF film that has been presented since 1992 during the concert break are financed jointly. In addition, the ORF is responsible for the TV feeds for selected concert pieces. Furthermore, the ORF can optionally take on a foreign concert of the Vienna Philharmonic, as most recently the performance from Macau under Andrés Orozco-Estrada with Yuja Wang as a soloist, shown in April 2020.
In addition to the cooperation with regard to the New Year’s and Midsummer Night’s concerts, the Vienna Philharmonic and the ORF have valid framework agreements on the exclusive presentation of Philharmonic subscription concerts on TV (ORF III) and radio (Ö1), via online streaming and video-on-demand (on the ORF TV and radio library) and on the classic portal fidelio operated by ORF and Unitel (www.myfidelio.at).
The next New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic can be seen live on ORF on January 1, 2021 at 11.15 a.m. on ORF 2 and Ö1, as well as a live stream via TVthek.ORF.at and oe1.ORF.at.
