World’s largest radio telescope
Big boom in Puerto Rico: video recordings show a spectacular collapse

See in the video: Puerto Rico – Video recordings show spectacular radio telescope collapse.Spectacular images on Tuesday from Puerto Rico: one of the largest radio telescopes in the world collapsed there with a great roar. The 900-ton instrument platform, which was suspended from steel cables 137 meters high above a reflector dish with a width of 305 meters, plunged into the depths, said the US National Science Foundation. Apparently nobody was injured. Experts had already discovered severe damage to the system’s holding ropes in August. An initially planned repair was rejected as too dangerous. The telescope – which received radio waves from space – had been used by scientists around the world. It was in operation for 57 years. The facility also became famous after key scenes of the James Bond film “GoldenEye” were filmed there in 1995.
