Samsung will usher in the new “smartphone year” on January 14th with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and its smaller sister models, that much is certain. However, there is still hardly any information about the new devices. That is changing now because we have all the technical details.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (5G) is the new top model of the most important smartphone series from the Korean electronics giant. The manufacturer is again making a big splash with the device and is also presenting a new design in which the camera module is now also at least partially enclosed by the housing frame.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is only available in black …

There is also a lot going on in terms of technology, because Samsung has brought a new flagship SoC into the European version with its in-house Exynos 2100 and for the first time offers support for its S Pen stylus in a “non-note” device, even if it is in the S21 Ultra is only an optional accessory and has to be purchased either with a cover or separately – and has no space in the housing.

Ultra-bright 6.8-inch WQHD + display with pen support

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is almost completely flat and is therefore a little smaller with an almost identical case size at 6.8 inches. The bulge on the sides is minimal in this case. The resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels is still at an extremely high level and reaches a pixel density of 515 PPI. The screen is in 20: 9 format.

Samsung lets the display of the S21 Ultra work with flexible refresh rates between one and 120 Hertz, so that it runs either very energy-efficiently through very low update rates or with very high update rates with a very smooth display of the content. The panel is also characterized by an extremely high maximum brightness of up to 1600 candela.
Officially, the manufacturer speaks of a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, but also describes it as an Infinity-O Edge Display. This means that the front camera is completely enclosed by the screen and sits in a hole on the upper edge. The cover of the panel is made of Gorilla Glass 7, better known as Gorilla Glass Victus, which should provide better resistance to scratches and knocks.

Individual pens as accessories and in a cover bundle

As far as we know, the S Pen, which is optional for the S21 Ultra, can be used on the device thanks to a Wacom digitizer and should technically, if at all, only differ slightly from the input pens known from the Galaxy Note series. It will be available both as a standalone accessory product and in a bundle with the Silicone Cover and the Smart Clear View Cover.

Samsung wants to make the camera problems of the predecessor forget

The cameras are one of the other main features of the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Samsung not only gives the device a laser autofocus, but also two telephoto zoom lenses with different focal lengths and magnifications. However, the focus is on the new 108-megapixel main sensor, which has a pixel edge length of 0.8 micrometers and has an optical image stabilizer.

With a size of 1 / 1.33 “, the new camera sensor is the same size as its predecessor from the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but should still deliver better images. Otherwise, the new main sensor with a 79 degree field of view and an f / 1.8 aperture is on it The paper has the same features, but the big changes have been made with the other cameras.

Hybrid-Optic-Zoom connects two zoom cameras

Samsung has installed two zoom cameras in the S21 Ultra, each of which offers three times and ten times magnification. Both have 10 megapixel resolution and probably use the same sensor with a 1.22 micrometer pixel edge length and a size of 1 / 3.24 “, as well as an optical image stabilizer.
One zoom camera, however, has a 35 degree field of view and a focal length equivalent of 72 millimeters. The second zoom camera has a field of view that is only 10 degrees wide, but thanks to the periscope optics it should have a focal length equivalent of 240 millimeters. The aperture size is f / 2.4 (3x) and f / 4.9 (10x) respectively.

In addition, an ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 megapixel resolution, f / 2.2 aperture and 13 millimeter focal length equivalent, 120 degrees wide field of view and 1.4 micrometer sensor pixels is installed, which has its own autofocus. In addition to the phase detection autofocus, a laser-based second autofocus system is also integrated.

The front camera has a very high resolution of 40 megapixels and uses a 1 / 2.8 “sensor with a pixel edge length of 0.7 micrometers, 80 degrees wide field of view and f / 2.2 aperture as well as built-in autofocus. According to Samsung, 8K UHD- Videos with 30 frames per second, 4K UHD videos with 60 frames per second and 1080p FullHD videos with a maximum of 240 frames per second supported.

New Samsung Exynos 2100 for Europe, Snapdragon remains for US devices

Under the hood in Europe is basically the new Samsung Exynos 2100. While the Snapdragon 888 5G is installed in the USA, Samsung is again using its own chip here. The new Samsung SoC has a total of eight CPU cores, with the ultra-high-performance core operating at 2.9 gigahertz.

The three other high-end cores run at a maximum of 2.8 gigahertz. The four energy-saving “small” cores each achieve a maximum of 2.4 gigahertz and are mainly used for tasks that do not require as much performance. The Exynos 2100, like its counterpart from Qualcomm, has an integrated 5G modem. Regarding the information about the Exynos SoC, it should be noted that our source is reliable, but we still regard the stated clock rates as provisional.

In Europe, the Galaxy S21 Ultra generally uses 12 gigabytes of RAM. Depending on the model, 128, 256 or 512 gigabytes of UFS memory are integrated, which, however, cannot be expanded using a microSD card slot. The S21 Ultra supports WiFi 6 according to the ax standard, Bluetooth 5.x as well as NFC and 5G mobile communications.

In future, customers will have to buy power packs and headphones separately

It has a 5000mAh battery that can be charged quickly using a 45-watt power adapter or fast wireless charging. However, as expected, Samsung does not include a power adapter for the Galaxy S21 Ultra in Germany, so that only a USB-C data cable is included. The AKG headphones that have been used up to now are no longer available and there is no longer a factory cover.

According to our sources, the Galaxy S21 Ultra weighs 228 grams and is in a housing made of glass and metal, which is also certified according to IP68 and is therefore marketed as waterproof and dustproof. There are stereo speakers again and an ultrasound-based fingerprint reader. The operating system is Android 11 with the new Samsung One UI 3.1. The versions of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G available in Germany are basically dual SIM models with two NanoSIM slots.

We have not yet received any official price information. However, other sources have already said that the S21 Ultra should cost at least 1399 euros.
