All of the precautionary measures taken by world champion Lewis Hamilton have been of no use: The 35-year-old Englishman has tested positive for Corona and is out at least for the next World Cup run.

World champion Mercedes confirms: “The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team regrets to announce that Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for Covid-19 and cannot participate in the upcoming Sakhir GP.”

“Lewis was tested three times in the past week and received a negative test result each time, most recently on Sunday afternoon at the Bahrain International Circuit as part of the usual test program on the race weekend.”

“But on Monday morning he woke up with mild symptoms and was informed at the same time that a person he was in contact with before arriving in Bahrain had retrospectively tested positive. Lewis therefore underwent a retest, which was positive. The result was confirmed in a subsequent test. “

“In accordance with Covid-19 regulations and Bahrain’s public health authorities, Lewis is now in isolation. Apart from mild symptoms, he is fine and feeling fit. The whole team sends him best wishes for a speedy recovery. “

“We will announce our plans for a replacement driver for the upcoming weekend later on.”

The first substitute is the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne.
