In a session marathon on Saturday, Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga and Health Minister Alain Berset called on the governments of six cantons to tighten the measures in view of increasing coronavirus infections. According to “NZZ am Sonntag” and “SonntagsBlick”, representatives of the cantons of St. Gallen and Thurgau took part. Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, Basel-Landschaft, Solothurn and Aargau took part in the talks.
Berset calls for consistent measures
The meeting had an impact. In the next few days, the cantons want to discuss measures and make decisions. Zurich, the most populous canton, did not take part in the talks. The Zurich FDP Councilor of States Ruedi Noser and the President of the Conference of Health Directors, Lukas Engelberger, see a need for action, according to the Sunday newspaper. It is important that the cantons particularly affected now adopt measures.
According to “SonntagsBlick”, Berset expects a consistent approach. Leisure and cultural facilities are to be closed. The upper limit for events should also continue to fall rapidly. At best, restaurants should also be sent to the forced vacation. If the cantons do not act quickly, the federal government will take action. According to reports, most of the cantons were cooperative.
No R value above 1
On Friday, Berset said the Federal Council would not wait until the situation got worse. In none of the cantons should there be an R value above 1, otherwise there would be an exponential growth in the number of infections with the corona virus. In more and more cantons in German-speaking Switzerland, however, there are values close to 1 or above 1. The Federal Council also has the option of taking measures for individual cantons if these do not act of their own accord, stressed Berset.
On Tuesday, the Federal Council wants to take stock and take new measures on Thursday for the whole of Switzerland or for individual cantons, Berset said on Friday. The canton of Graubünden took further measures on Friday to secure the winter season and closed all restaurants until December 18th.
The canton of Schaffhausen has meanwhile also tightened the corona measures. Gyms, indoor swimming pools, dance studios, fitness and wellness centers and the interiors of sports facilities will be closed. The same applies to museums, cinemas, theaters, youth clubs, gaming salons and erotic shops. The measures come into effect on Sunday at midnight and apply until December 22nd.
