Erlangen - So far, no confirmed case of infection with the coronavirus variant circulating in Great Britain has been discovered in Germany.

The board of the German Virological Society announced on Wednesday that 834 genome sequences from all parts of Germany have been examined in the consulting laboratory for coronaviruses in Berlin. In addition, more than 1400 genome sequences and over 500 partial sequences have been examined in various virological laboratories in Germany. The new variant could not be proven. Nevertheless, experts assume that the virus variant should have already reached Germany - albeit undetected.

The virologists pointed out that the test results are currently only a snapshot. The sequencing of entire virus genomes and the bioinformatic evaluation are time-consuming processes, so that current events cannot be adequately recorded.

The development of PCR methods for the specific detection of the new Sars-CoV-2 variant is currently being worked at full speed. According to a preliminary risk assessment by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the new variant may have a transmission rate that is up to 70 percent higher than the previously circulating Sars-CoV-2 variants, the GfV announced. However, this estimate must be checked in further studies.
