USA: Rapper Lil Nas X mixes up the heterosexual rap milieu

The Angels –

There aren’t many of his own kind in his industry: Rapper Lil Nas X stands out – and not just because of his extravagant outfits. The 21-year-old is not only incredibly successful, he also publicly acknowledged his homosexuality last year.

Big cars, heavy gold chains, naked women and cheekiness – many people associate these with hip-hop and rap. Of course, this picture falls far too short. Anyone who has left the gangster rap cliché behind them knows how political, socially critical, funny and clever hip hop can be. But no matter what rap size you go for, whether Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nas or Snoop Dogg, they all combine the display of heterosexual masculinity and potency.

Despite the straight rap world: Lil Nas X comes out as gay

Because rap is similar to football: you want to be tough, masculine, strong. To move in such a milieu and, like the US rapper Lil Nas X, to come out as gay – it takes courage and self-confidence.

The stage name of Lil Nas X already shows this self-confidence. Because despite the “Lil” in front of it, he is in line with the famous US rapper “Nas”, who is a real heavyweight in American hip-hop – his debut album “Illmatic” from 1994 is still considered a milestone.

Lil Nas X is not yet a heavyweight, but with his country trap song “Old Town Road” he landed a worldwide and special hit last year. The song topped the “Billboard Hot 100” for a total of 19 weeks, making it the most successful track in the history of the US charts.

“Old Town Road” is the most successful song on the US charts

In his music videos, the musician appears in bizarre costumes and creates wacky worlds through which he moves, rapping and dancing. Its melodies are somewhat reminiscent of the rapper Drake, while the outfits seem to tie in with the style of pop icons like Michael Jackson or Prince. However, it is difficult to classify Lil Nas X correctly.

He’s not one of those street rappers and he’s not one who took music seriously from the start. He only did it on the side while he was studying computer science at college, according to the streetwear blog “Highsnobiety”. Nevertheless, the young rapper knew right from the start how to market and present yourself well – especially on social media.

For his hit “Old Town Road”, Lil Nas X, in collaboration with country legend Billy Ray Cyrus, mixed country music and rap into a new style that has it all. The text moves between worlds just as it moves itself between musical genres: “I’ll take my horse to the old city street. I will ride until I can no longer. ”

Rapper Lil Nas X is more confident than ever thanks to coming out

Lil Nas X hits the nerve of the times with its fresh and unconventional otherness. His coming-out doesn’t seem to have hurt him – on the contrary. Contrary to what might have been expected, he got a lot of positive reactions, which he was very happy about. “I am now more confident than ever before. There are always phases that are difficult. But mostly I have a broad chest. ”

And he even goes one better: “As far as my personal development is concerned, it was probably the best year of my life. I got to know myself better and became more self-confident, ”said the 21-year-old.

Rapper Lil Nas X is working on new music during the corona crisis

The two-time Grammy winner is currently in the charts with the single “Holiday”. He uses the Corona time for his music, next year he wants to release his debut album. “Thanks to the Corona break, I was finally able to work on new music and didn’t have to keep performing and traveling. That did me good, ”says Lil Nas X.

We will see whether his new self-confidence and his coming out will also affect his rap lyrics. With his appearance and his demeanor, however, he is already shaking up the male-dominated rap scene enormously.
